Adobe FrameViewer Retrieval Tools box.jpg

Adobe FrameViewer Retrieval Tools, previously called Topic, was a separate add-on for FrameMaker and FrameViewer that was created by Verity and marketed by Adobe Systems. It supported Power Macintosh, Windows, and Unix platforms.

Features[]

FrameViewer Retrieval Tools give FrameMaker users full-text search capabilities with keywords or Boolean expressions across large document collections. Documents can be organized into logical groups and searches can be expedited with retrieval index scripts. Search history is recorded for future reference and retrieval databases are updated quickly with incremental indexing.[1]

One noted drawback was its inability to index very large individual documents.[2]

Product history[]

The retrieval tools were originally developed under the name of Topic by Verity of Mountain View, California and licensed to Frame Technology in 1992.[3] Frame Technology had intended to acquire Verity,[4] but instead only invested a US$2 million stake in 1993.[4]

After Frame Technology was acquired by Adobe Systems in October 1995,[5] version 5.1 was Adobe's only subsequent release.[1] The tools were discontinued with the release of FrameMaker 5.5.6, which added support for the Open Document Management application programming interface (ODMA) for document management systems.[6]
