Adobe Premiere Pro, formerly known as Adobe Premiere, is a real-time, timeline based video editing software application. It was part of the Adobe Creative Suite, an integrated collection of graphic design, video editing, and web development applications from Adobe Systems. It is now digitally distributed as part of Adobe Creative Cloud from Adobe Inc. Premiere Pro has many hardware and software partners, and is included as an OEM package with high-end video editing cards, such as the Matrox RT.X2.
Product history[]
Premiere Pro was launched in 2003 as the rewritten successor to Adobe Premiere. Although Premiere was available for Apple's Macintosh platform since 1991, Premiere Pro 1.x and 2.0 were only available for Windows due to the engineering costs of cross-platform development, and competition from products for Mac OS such as Final Cut Pro. However, CS3 (3.0) was released on July 1, 2007 for both the Windows and Macintosh operating systems (Intel-based Macs only).[1][2]
Since its rewrite, Premiere Pro has grown in acceptance by the film and video industry, and was used in such movies as Dust to Glory and Superman Returns[3] (for the video capture process), and other venues such as Madonna's Confessions Tour.[4]
Premiere Pro 1.5, released in 2004, improved support for high-definition video content, and added new project management tools and new filters. It also included support for 24p footage (such as footage from Panasonic's DVX-100). Version 1.5.1 added support for HDV.
Premiere Pro 2.0 further refined 24p and HDV editing, and it is the first major NLE to natively support the Canon 24F.[5] format on cameras such as the Canon XL H1, with an additional update.[6][7] Since version 2.0, Premiere Pro has required the processor to support SSE2, which is unavailable in some older processors.[8]
Premiere Pro CS3 added support for output to Blu-ray Disc, MPEG-4/H.264 and Flash-based web sites, as well as "Time Remapping," a simplified variable frame rate implementation. Premiere Pro CS3 3.1.0 added native Panasonic P2 MXF import, editing and export of DVCPRO, DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO HD material.
An entry-level version, Adobe Premiere Elements has been developed for the consumer market since 2004.
Premiere Pro faces direct competition in the marketplace from Sony Vegas, products from Avid, and Apple's Final Cut Pro.
Starting in October 2017, Adobe Creative Cloud applications, such as Premiere Pro CC, rely on the Windows or macOS operating systems for decoding and playback of Dolby audio. Premiere Pro CC 2017 and earlier are no longer available and future versions will not provide support for encoding Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus sound formats.[9]
